Aokigahara also known as the Jukai (Sea of trees) is on top of a lava flow from Mt. Fuji in 864 AD. Due to the thin soil in this area and unique shape of the lava, the trees have found very creative ways to root themselves creating some very interesting formations and shapes. We will be starting by the shore of lake Saiko, so you'll get some great views of the lake with Mt. Fuji as well.
We're going to be doing an easy 8km hike in the forest that will include a stop by one of the larger wild lava tubes. This is not a tourist cave with lights and paved paths, it is natural left as it was. We may even be able to see ice formations in the back of the cave.
The hike itself is not technical and there is not a ton of elevation change, but it is a very unique environment in Japan.
After the hike, we'll head to the shore of Kawaguchiko Lake for a beer in the sun. There's also a great ice cream shop there as well.
