We are looking to get the most out of the last bit of winter at Yatsugadake, and have planned an exciting trip. Introduction to Ice Climbing and a classic winter mountain traverse all in one weekend. Check out last year's photos here!
Friday Night- We will do pick-ups at Fuchu and Fuchu Honmachi then drive out to the mountains with the plan to camp out at a Michi-no-eki or stay in the sleeping room at the trailhead.
Saturday- We'll get up early and after breakfast head up to Aka-dake-kosen hut and set up our camp, and then we'll spend the day trying out some ice climbing on top-rope. (1,500 yen additional fee applies for using the Ice Candy area) All technical gear will be provided by Kanto Adventures. There will also be an opportunity to review mountaineering skills like self arrest, crampon techniques like french technique, and axe techniques including low and high dagger which will come in handy on our traverse. (Mountain hut lodging is available at your own expense)
Sunday- We will wake up around 4 a.m. fix up a quick breakfast and then start up Io-dake at first light, which is a relatively simple climb, and reach the summit around 7 a.m. After sunrise we will work our way across the rim and then begin the exciting traverse across Yoko-dake which features some great exposure and rock scrambles which will make you feel like a hard-core mountaineer (though nothing too technical).
After taking a break below the summit of Aka-dake, we'll head up to the summit and then down Bunzaburo ridge and back to our campsite. We'll clear out our campsite and then head down.
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after 2 days in the snow.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
