9/5~6 (Sat~Mon) Hakusan Overnight Hike

Hakusan is one of the 3 most sacred mountains in Japan, grouped in with the likes of Mt. Fuji and Tateyama. It is also far from Tokyo with difficult access. We have built this trip in a way that gives you a chance to really enjoy the mountain over 2 days with train transport back to Tokyo after the climb (not included) from Kanazawa, which is also a great destination to spend a few hours seeing and experiencing the history and great food culture of this seaside ancient city.

Saturday:
Your journey begins at the Hirasedo trailhead, where the trail wasted no time in immersing you in a lush, verdant forest. As you ascend the well-maintained zig-zags, the canopy occasionally breaks to offer stunning views of the turquoise Lake Shirakawa shimmering far below. The climb is a steady, rewarding grind that transitions from dense woodland into alpine shrubbery, eventually revealing the rugged, volcanic character of Mount Hakusan. Upon reaching the Murodo plateau, the landscape opens up into a high-altitude sanctuary. After a quick drop-off of your gear, you’ll push for the final 30-minute scramble to the Gozenmine summit (2,702m). Standing at the top, you are treated to a 360-degree panorama of the Japanese Alps and, if the weather behaves, a spectacular sunset that paints the surrounding "White Mountain" in hues of deep orange and purple.

Total hiking distance is 7.5km with 1350 meters of elevation gain and 450 lost.
Sunday:
Day 2 starts before dawn; after a quick breakfast, you’ll begin your descent back down the Hirasedo trail, retracing your steps through the morning mist while the knees do the heavy lifting. Once back at the trailhead, a scenic drive or bus ride whisks you away to Kanazawa. The contrast is striking as you swap trekking poles for a stroll through the pristine Kenrokuen Garden or the preserved samurai districts. After a few hours of soaking in the refined culture and perhaps some fresh seafood at Omicho Market, you’ll board the Hokuriku Shinkansen, reflecting on the transition from ancient peaks to neon lights as you zip back to Tokyo.

After the hike we will stop by a local hot spring at the trailhead before heading to Kanazawa. The contrast is striking as you swap trekking poles for a stroll through the pristine Kenrokuen Garden or the preserved samurai districts.
