We are sdqueezing in one last hike before rainy season with an overnight trip to the Oze Marshland. This will be different from typical Oze trips that just walk on the boardwalks. We will spend Saturday traversing along a ridge above the marsh and then drop into the marsh to head to an Onsen hut near a couple of awesome waterfalls where we will spend the night in a location that has amazing views of the Milky-way at night. Sunday will be along a different route with a summit climb of Shibutsu-zan one of the 100 famous mountains.
Saturday:
This scenic route from Hatomachi-toge Pass to the Fujimi-tashiro wetlands offers a tranquil alternative to the busier main trails of Oze National Park, rewarding hikers with breathtaking alpine vistas and serene marshlands. Known for the stunning "Heavenly Paradise" of Ayame-daira, the path climbs through lush forests to reach expansive plateaus filled with crystal-clear ponds (Chito) and vibrant seasonal wildflowers. After taking in the panoramic views of Mt. Shibutsu and Mt. Hiuchigatake, the trail descends toward the Onsen-koya area via the Nagasawa path, providing a perfect blend of high-altitude exploration and the classic Oze marsh experience.
Total hiking distance is 15km with 400 meters of elevation gain and 600 lost.

Sunday:
For day two of your hike, you will tackle a challenging but rewarding climb from the Onsen Koya area (near Ryugu) across the vast Ozegahara Marshland toward the base of Mount Shibutsu. The ascent up the mountain via the Yamanohana route is steep and features slippery serpentine rock, but it offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire Ozegahara basin and the surrounding peaks of the Nikko range. After reaching the 2,228-meter summit, you’ll begin a steady descent through alpine meadows and rocky trails down to Hatomachi-toge, the main gateway to the park. This leg of the hike covers approximately 11.5 kilometers with an elevation gain of roughly 950 meters, making it a strenuous but iconic finish to your Oze adventure.
After the hike we will stop by a local hot spring in the Oze area before returning to Tokyo.
