6/29~7/7 (Sat~Sun) HIgh Tatras - 5 day Trek

The Tatra Mountains are located along the Polish and Slovakian border about 2 hours south of Krakow. The Tatras are home to wildlife including the Tatra chamois, marmot, lynx and bears. There are rocky peaks throughout the mountain chain as well as alpine lakes all over. This trip will feature 5 days of trekking across the Slovakian side of the High Tatras spending 2 nights in mountain huts and 2 nights in a lake side mountain hotel. 

The trip starts and finishes in Krakow, Poland and there will be time to explore this amazing city before and after the trek.

Schedule
Everyone is requested to arrive in Krakow on Saturday June 28th or in the early morning (Before 8 a.m.) of Sunday June 29th. 

There are a number of flights departing on Friday evening and Saturday that arrive between Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon, so please select your flights accordingly. If you arrive early on Saturday there will be time to explore Krakow, try some amazing food, and visit some museums and cathedrals. 
*Saturday lodging is not included in Krakow - Meetup will be on the North side of the Old City near the Barbakan.

June 29 (Sun) - ​ Tatranska Lominka
Lodging: Wellness Village Astra
7:00 a.m. - We will arrange meet up in central Krakow and begin the 2 hour drive to the base of the Tatras in Slovakia.  Along the way we will stop at the 14th century Dunajec Castle next to a large lake near the Slovakian border in Poland. After this we plan to arrive in Tatranska Lominka for lunch and then have the option to explore the village or take a cable car up to the higher mountains where some short hikes are available with great views, and the option to take a 3 wheel mountain cart back down the mountain.

June 30 (Mon) - Tatranska Lominka - the Green Lake
Distance: 12.2km - Elevation Gained: 855m Elevation 
Lodging: Zelene Pleso Cottage

This first day is an amazing start with a huge variety of scenery. Starting from the village of Tatranska Lominka we will begin gradually climbing up from pin eforests into the alpine zone surrounded by rocky peaks. The hiking is not technical this day, the trail is well established.

July 1 (Tue) - Zelene Pleso Cottage to Zamkovskeho Cottage - Distance: 8.6km - Elevation Gained: 615m
Lodging: Zamkovskeho chata

The route is not super difficult or long. The first part of the trail is even prettier than the first day as we slowly descend back into forests before beginning a 450 meter ascent up to Skalnaté Pleso an alpine lake with amazing views surrounded by high rocky peaks. Lunch will be at a hut just below the lake. After lunch we have a gentle ascent up to a pass and then walk with great views of Slavkovský Štit, the 4th highest peak of the Tatras. Then we arrive at our hut for the evening. There are optional short hikes up to some alpine lakes below the large peaks for those who want to walk a bit more.

July 2 (Wed) - Zamkovskeho Cottage - Poprodske Lake
Distance: 19.8km - Elevation gained 1196m Elevation Lost 1400m
Lodging: 
Propodske Pleso
This day is a long hike but overall the elevation gain is quite gradual with some time spent in forest, and a significant amount of the time surrounded by dwarf pine making it feel like walking through a labrynth. We will stop by the Velicke lake for lunch and there are also a number of waterfalls along this route. From there the walk is all above the treeline with views of the high peaks throughout the 3.5 hours to Proprodske Lake where we will stay for two nights.

July 3 (Thu) Rysy Peak Hike
Distance: 11km - Elevation gained and lost 1150m
Lodging: Propodske Pleso

This day we will leave most of our luggage behind and climb up to the highest non-technical climb in the Tatras, which is also the highest point in Poland. The peak straddles the Polish and Slovakian border and offers amazing views after this challenging climb. There is a hut along the way for lunch. There are some chain and ladder sections along the way, but the path is well maintained and established. It is also the most climbed peak in Slovakia. July 4 (Fri) Poprodske Lake - Strbske Lake
Distance: 5.3km - Elevation gained: 150m
Lodging: Draggo House

On our final day after breakfast will be an easy 2.5 hour walk to Strbske Lake, which is known as the most beautiful lake in the Tatras. There will be plenty of time to relax here at one of the hotel cafes or explore the lakeside. This is a great place to finish our hike before heading back to Krakow in the afternoon.

July 5 (Sat)
You'll have the morning available to explore Krakow.  Depending on flight schedules there may be a possibility of a ride to the airport before we return rental cars.

July 6 (Sun)
Depending on your flight schedule you will arrive at either Narita or Haneda in the afternoon to early evening.

*You are also welcome to arrive on an earlier day or depart at a later day if you wish to explore more in the area before coming back to Japan. 

Payment Details
50% of the trip fee is due within 1 week of booking, and the remainder will be due 1 month before the trip. 

Showers: There will be showers available on June 30, July 1, and July 3rd. July 2nd and 4th huts have no shower facilities. 

Cancellation Policy:
Any cancellations less than 30 days before the departure date will be subject to a 100% cancellation fee. 31 to 60 days before the departure date will be subject to a 50% cancellation fee.

If you do not enroll in a European Alpine club membership before the trip, there will be an additional 10 Euro charge you will need to pay for two nights in the mountain huts.

*European Alpine Club Membership is required to participate - The best deal is through the Austrian Alpine club UK Branch, which gives you one year of rescue insurance for around 7,000 yen.
