Join us on a moderate level winter adventure to the southern Tohoku region to climb Adatara-yama (安達太良山)one of the 100 famous mountains in winter. The trip is not a technical climb and can be done with only crampons, trekking poles, and snowshoes if the snow is deep down low. The trip features wonderful winter scenery as well as snow monsters up high.
**2/14 (Sun) is also reserved in case of bad weather on Saturday, so please have both days available so we can have the best possible conditions for this hike.
You do need to have appropriate clothing and boots for this hike, and if you have any questions or concerns please get in touch. Our total hiking distance is approximately 9km with 800 meters of elevation gained and lost. Nothing is too steep. We start at the Adatara Kogen Ski resort and take a loop route heading through pine forest in the beginning climbing up to the Kurogane Hut (くろがね小屋)for a short break before heading along the main summit ridge traversing above the crater of the volcano to head to the summit.
From the summit we will head down the southeast ridge eventually reaching the top of the ski resort, and then we will follow a trail that borders the ski resort back down to the car where there is a hot spring next to the trailhead.
This hike is fine for people without snow hiking experience, but not good for people who have never hiked or climbed mountains before.
Backcountry Ski
This route is also a popular backcountry ski route (or splitboard), so if you have backcountry gear including climbing skins then you are welcome to ski along this route instead of snowshoe. None of the terrain is very steep, but you do need to be a confident skier with experience in varying snow terrain in case of difficult snow conditions on the descent.
***When you sign up, please include details of the type of boots you have so we can more quickly approve your sign-up. We can also recommend a place to get rental boots in Tokyo if you need.
