Aizu-Komagatake is a hidden gem on the border of Fukushima and Tochigi Prefectures. It is notoriously difficult to access by public transportation, and due to the distance we will leave on Friday night so we can spend more time hiking on Saturday than driving in the car.
The hike is just under 12km and 950 meters of elevation is gained and lost in this out and back hike. The hike starts out in the forest and about halfway through breaks out into the alpine zone up above tree line with great views all around. The fall colors should be giving us their best especially up in the alpine area at this time. By starting early we'll be able to spend plenty of time up top enjoying the views before heading back down the way we came hitting a hot spring on the way home.
