Aka-dake is the highest peak of the Yatsuga-dake range and one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan. This is a challenging loop route up Kenkai Ridge (県界尾根) and back down Shinkyoji Ridge (真教寺尾根). There are plenty of rock scrambles and chain sections on this hike.
On Friday night we head out to the mountains and camp out at a Michi-no-eki close to the trailhead. This hike is big and has a lot of elevation gain so we need to get a very early start on Saturday. The hike starts out in a ski area and gradually starts ascending through forest. As soon as we leave the forest we begin the steep climbing up some chain sections and rock scrambles. It is not super exposed, but provides a nice challenge for those who like vertical ascents. After reaching the summit we'll have lunch and then start down the Kenkai Ridge.
This is also challenging with some ladder sections and steep chain sections. After leaving these steep section the hike down the main ridge is very pleasant with a final semi-steep descent to get back to the ski area where the car is parked. Then we'll clean up a bit and head back to Tokyo getting back by 6 p.m.
*Sunday 7/24 is also reserved in case of bad weather please try to make yourself available both days.
