Akagi-yama is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan and an awesome winter hike, great for those with or without experience. Total hiking distance is around 5km with 550 meters of elevation gained. We are going in the middle of the fall colors season for this mountain and should see some great views around the shrine at the bottom as well as throughout this loop hike.
Our route is a loop hike heading up the west ridge of the main peak of Akagi-yama. It is not super steep but gains elevation quickly working up from the lakeside gradually moving up to tree line just below the summit. Lunch will be on the summit if it is not too windy otherwise we'll drop down along the summit ridge to a wind sheltered area for lunch. Then we continue the awesome summit ridge traverse with great views and head down a different ridge to get back to the lake and our starting point.
After finishing the hike it's a short drive to a nice hot spring with great outdoor baths with views of Akagi and then we aim to be back in Tokyo before 7:30 p.m.
