We are heading up to the highlands of Nagano Prefecture for the holiday weekend to escape the crowds and heat to spend 2 nights camping at 1,200 meters and 3 days hiking, with the main highlight being Amakazari-yama one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan.
Saturday
We will depart Tokyo early and head out to the mountains. We cannot check in to the campground until after 2 p.m. so we are going on a relatively easy hike along the way at Onagiyama (大渚山). Round trip hiking distance is 6km with just 300 meters of elevation gain, making it a good warm up for the weekend. Dinner will be prepared over the fire and we'll also be able to roast marshmallows.
Sunday
We'll wake up to a great camping breakfast and then get ready for the day's adventure. Sunday will be a big day hitting up Mt. Tenguhara and Kaneyama (金山). The hike is 14 km total with 1,200 meters of elevation gain. The hike starts out gentle for the first 2~3 km hiking along a river valley then begins the ascent up the Southwest ridge of Tenguhara. From the first peak we'll have good views of Kaneyama our goal for the day. Kaneyama is a dormant volcano in the Myoko range, and the final climb is quite fun with some occasional light scrambling. We will descend back the way we came and then head to the campground for a big dinner cooked in the dutch oven and an evening campfire.
Monday
We'll have a simple quick breakfast and then pack up our campsite so we can get an early start on Amakazari-yama (雨飾山). This is not a technical route, and a 7km out and back hike with 1,000 meters of elevation gained and lost. The upper part of the mountain is above tree line, lots of wild flowers, and 360 degree views make this a great 100 'meizan'. (100名山).
After the hike, we'll get cleaned up and then make the journey back to Tokyo early to avoid the worst of the traffic.
Campground Notes
-Tents will be provided, and some rental camping gear available
-Shower and Hot bath are available at the camp ground for a small fee
