Mt. Amakazari (雨飾山) is a 1,963 meter peak on the border of Nagano and Niigata not far from Hakuba and Myoko. This area is quite difficult to access, so we have put this trip together to make it easier to check this off your 100 famous mountains list.
This trip will meet up on Friday night in Ikebukuro and we will head up close to the mountain and camp out at a road station (道の駅) and stay at Nakajo, leaving us about 1 hour to go on Saturday morning.
We are timing this to get the fall colors on the lower part of the mountain and great views up high. Some years there is snow near the top of the mountain in late October, so we will have crampons available for everyone in case of some unseasonably early snow, but plan to go ahead with the trip if the conditions are safe.
This hike starts out gentle but then gradually starts gain up a ridge through the forest and eventually reaches the halfway point at a great river / waterfall area. From here we have some very steep climbing up a ridge to reach the main summit plateau, and then it's relatively nice walking up to the top. Descent will be via the same route.
After the climb we stop by a hot spring before heading back to Tokyo./
