7/11~7/19 (Sat~Sun) Aosta Valley - Gran Paradiso National Park

We have put together an amazing deal for a one week trip trekking in the Aosta Valley in Northern Italy on the border with Switzerland. More specifically we will be trekking in the Grand Paradiso National Park with possible views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Monta Rosa all possible from the high passes.

We will meet up in Milan home of amazing art, cathedrals, and great. For those who arrive on Friday or Saturday, there will be time to explore the city before beginning the trek. 

Some meals are included and listed below, but huts without included meals, you may order off the menu. The mountain cuisine is amazing and you will not go hungry on this trek.

Schedule
Everyone is requested to arrive in Milan no later than 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 12th.
There are a number of flights departing on Friday evening and Saturday that arrive between Saturday morning and Sunday morning. Please select your flights accordingly. If you arrive on Saturday there will be time to explore central Milan, try some amazing food, and visit some museums and cathedrals. If you arrive later than 8:30 a.m Sunday., there are public transport options to get to Aosta Valley, but you will miss out on some of Sunday's activities. 
*For Saturday arrivals, lodging is not included in Milan - Meetup will be near the central station

July 12th (Sun) - ​ Aosta Valley Touring
Lodging: Hotel Mochettaz
7:30 a.m. - We will arrange meet up in central Milan and pick up anyone arriving at the airport on Sunday morning. 
After gathering our group together, we will make a 2 hour drive to Aosta where we will spend the day. Aosta is an ancient Roman city site having the most intact Roman period structures outside of Rome. We will spend the day visiting some of these sites as well as a 12th century castle and eating some great Italian food. After exploring the city, we are planning to have dinner at the B63 Beer Hall which often has live music in the evenings.

July 13 (Mon) - Rhemes Notre Dame - Colle della Finestra - Rif Chalet de l'Eppee
Distance: 7km - Elevation Gained: 920m Lost: 540
Lodging: Chalet de l'Eppee Refuge

For our first day of trekking, it is not a long distance to cover, but definitely will be a challenging climb. We start in the quiet village of Rhemes Notre-Dame a rustic town with a church at the center with the tower dating back to the 15th century. We will be hiking along the Alta Via 2 trail a wide well established path climbing up to the Finestra Pass with some amazing views including our first views of some of the glaciers. From there it's a gentle descent down to our mountain hut for the night.

July 14 (Tue) - Chalet de l'Eppee- Alta Via Glaciale Route - Rif. M. Bezzi
Distance: 8km - Elevation Gained: 350m Lost: 400m
Lodging: Bezzi Refuge

This is not a difficult day with the first half of the hike being mostly flat. Despite this, the scenery is spectacular walking above the Valgrisenza Valley. This part of the trail is the Alta Via Glaciale Route, and there are views of glaciers on both sides of the valley as well as views of numerous rocky peaks above these glaciers. After arriving at the hut and having lunch, there are a couple of alpine lake day hikes we can do with light bags

July 15 (Wed) - Bezzi Hut - Bassac Dere Pass - Goletta Lake - Rif G.F. Benevolo
Distance: 11km - Elevation gained 800m Lost: 700m
Lodging: Benevolo Refuge

We will continue hiking along the Alta Via Glaciale route and gain a good bit of altitude on this day. It will be challenging, and the upper part of the trail will be rocky with a good bit of time spent on glacial moraine, but the trail is very well established. The highlight will be the Bassac Dere pass situated above the Gliairetta and Golvetta Glaciers. This is some absolutely stunning alpine scenery. After having lunch at the pass, we descend along Goletta lake and finish at the Benevolo Refuge for the night.

July 16 (Thu) Benevolo Refuge - Nivoletta Pass - Città di Chivasso
Distance: 8km - Elevation gained 1050m Lost: 800
Lodging:
Città di Chivasso​ Refuge
On this day we will head up to the highest elevation of this trek. The track is well established and fairly gentle for the beginning with some challenging climbing up the final part to Nivoletta Pass. From here,we will ascend to the top of Basei Point at 3,380 meters and features a 360 degree panorama of Gran Paradiso National Park.  After having lunch up top it will be a rocky but short descent down to the Chivasso Refuge surrounded by 4 alpine lakes where we will spend the night.

July 17 (Fri) Città di Chivasso - Leynir Pass - Thumel
Distance: 9km - Elevation gained 580m and 1100m lost
Lodging: Residenza Cenisio

On our final day after breakfast we will set off early making a relatively gentle climb up to the Leynir pass where we have an optional 200 meter climb to Leynir Point for our last great panorama view of the park. The descent starts off a bit rocky with morraine, but then gradually smooths out into a wide hiking path descending at a pace that is not too rough on the knees. We finish in the farm village of Thumel just 4 km from where we started. After having lunch we will make the drive back to Milan and spend the evening enjoying the city,

July 18 (Sat)
You'll have the morning available to explore Milan. We'll plan transport to the airport based on everyone's flight times. If you have a later flight then you may be requested to take public transportation, but the cost is minimal as the airport is close to the city center.

July 19 (Sun)
Depending on your flight schedule you will arrive at either Narita or Haneda in the afternoon to early evening.

*You are also welcome to arrive on an earlier day or depart at a later day if you wish to explore more in the area before coming back to Japan. 

Payment Details
50% of the trip fee is due within 48 hours of booking, and the remainder will be due 2 weeks before the trip. 

Mountain Huts: Mountain huts in the Alps are very comfortable, and you can expect to have a lot more space than you would in a Japanese mountain hut. Prices for food are very reasonable and it is all super tasty. Local beers cost 3~5 euros for 500ML, and many of the huts are also equipped with coin showers. You will need to have a sleeping bag liner or cotton sleep sack for staying in the huts though. 

Showers: Some of the huts are equipped with showers, some may not. We are currently checking and will write more details as they come available.

Cancellation Policy:
Any cancellations less than 30 days before the departure date will be subject to a 100% cancellation fee. 31 to 60 days before the departure date will be subject to a 50% cancellation fee.

・Required Equipment: Trekking boots, rain jacket and pants, warm layers, 35L backpack, headlight, 2L water, Via Ferrata set, and money to purchase food on the trail. 
*European Alpine Club Membership Required to participate - The best deal is through the Austrian Alpine club which gives you one year of rescue insurance and club membership for around 64 Euro.
