Azumaya-san (四阿山) is a 2,354M peak on the edge of the North Alps just west of Karuizawa. This is a highland area and tends to stay cool summer and avoids a lot of the rainy season rain due to the surrounding higher mountains creating a rain shadow.
This trip will meet up on Friday night in Hanno with lodging at Hiker's B&B so we can get a super early start on Saturday morning.
The total hiking distance is 13km over a loop route taking in Neko-dake as well as Azumaya-san which is one of the 100 famous mountains. The lower part of the mountain is home to some free range dairy cows making for an atmosphere reminiscent of the European Alps. Lots of flowers should be blooming up high and if the clouds cooperate we should have some amazing views.
There is very little steep terrain and the ascent is quite gradual and balanced.
After the hike we will spend about an hour at a hot spring near the trailhead and then make the drive back home.
*Sunday is also reserved as a backup date in case bad weather is forecast for Saturday. - If you are not able to join Sunday, you can still get a full refund in the event the trip gets rescheduled.
