Dewa Sanzan (出羽三山, "three mountains of Dewa") are three sacred mountains in Yamagata Prefecture, each with a shrine on or near its peak. The mountains are named Haguro-san, Gas-san and Yudono-san and remain centers of mountain worship. Representing birth (Haguro-san), death (Gas-san) and rebirth (Yudono-san). We will be visiting these mountains in the traditional pilgrimage order.
This trip is car camping where we will be based at the Kyukamura Haguro Campground which also features hot spring baths making it a very comfortable camping experience.
We'll be eating well in camp cooking over a fire, baking in a dutch oven, and barbecuing up a great variety of meat and veggies.:
Friday Night: We will be meeting up in Hanno and staying at the Hiker's B&B so we can get an early start on Saturday before traffic jams get started.
Saturday: We will depart around 5 a.m. and begin the drive up to Tohoku taking a few rest breaks along the way. We will head straight to our campground first to set up our tent site at the Haguro Campground which includes a hot spring on site.
After lunch in the afternoon we'll visit Mt. Haguro. We'll ascend the 2,446 stone steps through an old growth forest and see numerous shrines and temples along the path. Other features include the 5 Story Pagoda which is a Japanese National Treasure as well as the summit of Mt. Haguro and main shrine of the mountain. Total hiking distance is 3.5km.
Dinner will be cooked in the campsite on either camp stove or dutch oven.
Sunday: This is our big hiking day! We will need to drive about 45 minutes to the base of the Gassan ski area and then begin the ascent to the summit of Gassan. Much of this hike is above tree line with 360 degree views, alpine ponds, and plenty of wildflowers! After ascending to the summit we'll traverse along the main ridge and descend to Yudano-san which is the final stop on our pilgrimage route.
Yudono-san's (湯殿山) shrine is considered to be a kind of inner sanctum of the Dewa Sanzan. In fact, Yudono-san is so sacred anyone who visits this shrine is forbidden from taking photos or even speaking about what they see in this shrine. After taking a taxi to pick up the van, we'll stop by a local hot spring before heading back to the campsite to make another spectacular camp dinner.
Monday: Our final day will not be super rushed. After breakfast we will pack up the camp site and will have an opportunity to visit one more hot spring before making the journey home. We plan to get everyone back to Ikebukuro Station by 5 p.m.
