Echigo Komagatake (越後駒ケ岳) is a 2,002 meter peak in the Echigo mountains north of the Yuzawa area near the Japan sea. Due to the heavy snow fall in this area, the tree line is quite low making for an awesome alpine hike with 360 degree views on the high ridges.
This trip will meet up on Friday night in Ikebukuro and we will head up close to the mountain and camp out at a road station (道の駅) so we can get an early start on this hike.
The total hiking distance is 14km on an out and back trail with 1,300 meters of elevation gained and lost. The hike starts out at treeline and occasionally drops into small groves, but overall the hike is all in the alpine zone with great 360 degree views throughout.
There is very little steep terrain but the ascent is definitely a fitness challenge.
