Futago-yama (二子山) in Chichibu is a well known mountain to rock climbers and offers some great multi-pitch climbing. There is also an awesome scramble route heading up the two peaks, and it is often referred to as the Gendarme of Chichibu.
We will be taking a loop route that starts lower in the forest and climbs up to the pass between a couple of different peaks. This is where the normal trail splits off into an advanced trail (上級者コース). This route used to have chains on it, but the land manager removed them fearing liability and wanting to give people an opportunity to climb the mountain in it's true state.
Now this is a very steep scramble, but the rock is solid limestone, rock fall is rare, and there are plenty of great foot and hand holds throughout. For anyone afraid of heights they should stay away from this climb. Exposure is real and there are times that you will feel the height quite significantly. We will carry a rope to belay people who are having difficulty or feel they need a little bit of extra safety to get through, but overall you should feel confident moving on steep rock faces.
If you have done Myougi, the Daikiretto, Gendarme, or similar scramble climbs in the past, you will definitely enjoy this route. The descent is not technical and basically a normal hiking trail. After the climb we stop by a very historic onsen with indoor and outdoor baths before heading back.
