8/11~8/14 (Thu~Sun) Mt. Zao Gassan and Asahi-dake - Tohoku Camp

We are heading up to Tohoku for 4 days and 3 nights of camping in the highland area between Gassan (月山) and Asahi-dake (大朝日岳). This will also be the peak of the Perseid meteor shower and this mountain location is awesome for watching the stars.

This trip is car camping where we will be based at the Kyukamura Haguro Campground which also features hot spring baths making it a very comfortable camping experience. The campground is situated at 800 meters elevation so should be about 8~10 degrees cooler than Tokyo.

We'll be eating well in camp cooking over a fire, baking in a dutch oven, and barbecuing up a great variety of meat and veggies.:

Wednesday Night: We will be meeting up at Ikebukuro station and then heading up towards Tohoku and spend the first night near Yonezawa at a roadside camp.

Thursday:  We will depart around 5 a.m. and begin the drive continue the drive but will make a stop off in Zao to climb up to the peak of Mt. Zao to get our first of the three 100 famous mountains we are climbing this weekend. The hike has about 250 meters of elevation gain and is about 2 hours in total. After Zao we will continue driving towards our camp. Before we get to the campground we will stop by the Honzan Jionji Temple, a 1300 year old temple and National Historic Treasure in Japan. After this we willl head to our campground first to set up our tent site at the Yumihari Daira Campground which has showers on site and an onsen nearby.

Dinner will be cooked in the campsite on either camp stove or dutch oven.

Friday:  This is a nice hiking day!  We will need to drive about 20 minutes to the base of the Gassan ski area and then begin the ascent to the summit of Gassan. Much of this hike is above tree line with 360 degree views, alpine ponds, and plenty of wildflowers! After ascending to the summit we'll visit the shrine located at the top which requires participating in a purfication ritual before entering but there are many interesting things at this summit shrine and you can get your temple book stamped here as well. Descent will be

We will change the descent route a bit and walk along the west ridge for a while before dropping back down towards the ski area and return to the car. This hike is rated 1B

Saturday:  Our summit day on Asahi-dake will be a big day. A total of 16km walked with 1,500 meters of elevation gained and lost, making this a level 1C+ hike. Nothing is super steep on this climb as it climbs along a ridge nearly the entire way. Expect the climb to take 8~9 hours total including breaks, but we will get an early start so we will not have to rush. As we get up above tree line we will have amazing views of Gassan and the Northern part of Yamagata, and then once we reach the false summit we'll be able to see the mountains of Zao as well. Then it's a lovely ridge walk to the true summit of Asahi-dake. This is one of the greatest climbs in Tohoko and is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan.

Sunday:  Our final day will not be super rushed. After breakfast we will pack up the camp site and take some time heading back dropping into some farmers markets for fresh fruit and ice cream as we head home We plan to get everyone back to Ikebukuro Station by 5 p.m.
