This hike is one of the best ridge traverses in all of the Japanese Alps. There's tons of rock scrambling, some knife ridges, and we'll also stand on top of 2 of the 100 famous mountains of Japan.
Mountain Hut Lodging is required on this trip to go light and fast on the technical ridge traverse. Reservations at the huts have been secured.
Saturday Night:
We will meet up in Hanno and spend the night at our Hiker's B&B, so we can hit the highway early and beat all the traffic.
Sunday:
Our first day is a tough climb, but only about 4 to 5 hours total. We start out at the Goryu Ski area and take a Gondola up above tree line to begin our hike. Then it's mostly a gentle ridge walk for the first half of the day. From there we hit some scrambling sections with a few chains and ladders, and eventually make it up to the Goryu Hut here we can spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing with some great views.
Monday:
This is the big day. We'll make breakfast (bagel sandwhich) the night before, and set off around 4:00 a.m. to begin our traverse. The climb to the summit of Goryu is not too challenging but does have a bit of exposure and some chain sections which we will be doing at first light. We plan to have breakfast on the summit and will boil some hot water so everyone can have coffee as well.
We will be wearing harnesses and helmets, and use tethers and carabiners to clip into the chain in the more exposed or dangerous areas. The descent starts off quite steep with lots of down climbing, but the foot holds and hand holds are very solid, and not too exposed. It takes about 2.5 hours to drop down to the Kiretto Hut where we will take a break before beginning an exciting climb to the summit of Kashimayari. This will features some very narrow cut out walking paths along steep rock walls, a number of chains and ladders, and plenty of exposure throughout.
Once we reach the summit of Kashimayari, we'll have some great views and then it's an easy 1 hour walk down to the our hut for the night. The total hiking time expected this day is 9 to 10 hours.
Tuesday
After breakfast at the hut, we'll set off along the main ridge and head up to the summit of Jiigadake (爺ガ岳) and then we head down a ridge and drop down to the main road finishing off an awesome Northern Alps Traverse.
