Gunma Hotaka Yama is one of the 100 famous mountains located on the outskirts of the Oze area close to the Niigata Gunma border. This is a great introduction to winter mountaineering with no technical terrain, but the entire route is above tree line with great views and a number of climbs and descents along the route to get a real feel of climbing with an ice axe and crampons.
Our hiking route will start at the top of the Kawaba ski area where will take some time to practice ice axe basic skills including self belay and self arrest to stop yourself in the event of a fall. Even for those with experience this is always good practice to keep your skills fresh.
After practicing our climbing skills start off immediately with a climb up to the top of Kengamine a sharp peak at the start of the summit ridge to Hotaka. The view from the top is 360 degrees and we will be able to see our entire climbing route if the weather cooperates. From there it's a short descent to the main summit ridge which will take us along to see snow monsters, trees frozen over with rime ice. There are a number of ups and downs but overall the total elevation gain is about 600 meters.
After having lunch on the summit we will head back the way we came and take the lifts down.
After getting back to the car, we will make a short drive to a local hot spring to warm up in a great outdoor hot spring in the snow.
*Appropriate 3 season boots and previous hiking experience required
