This trip is a great chance to get up into the North Alps while they are still covered with snow but when the weather is stable and snow conditions great for a snow climb. The timing is good for spotting Ptarmigan (雷鳥). This is a great intro level climb for those just getting starting with BC touring, but also good for those with experience. The views are amazing up here and there are lots of turns to be had on the way down.
*Sunday the 29th is reserved for this climb in case of bad weather on Saturday, final decision will be made Thursday before the trip.
Friday Night- We will do pick-ups in Fuchu at 8 p.m. and then spend the night at a Michi-no-eki road station about 40 minutes from the Tsugaike gondola. There will be a convenience store stop along the way to pick up breakfast for Saturday and any other supplies needed.
Saturday- We will wake up around 6:00 a.m. pack our bags and start heading up to the Tsugaike. The gondola starts running at 8:00 so we will get up to the alpine plaza early to make sure we get a good spot in line for the first gondola. After reaching the top, we will then transfer to the Tsugaike Ropeway and take that as high as it goes.
The climb will start from the top of of the Tsugaike Ropeway and then head up a gentle ridge in the beginning. This will gradually get steeper requiring some switch backs to make it up on skis, and then things will flatten out for a bit on the Tengu Plain. From the Tengu plain, we will ascend the final pyramid to the summit where depending on time, it may be possible to do a few ski laps on this peak to make some tracks in the untouched spring snow.
Total climbing distance from ropeway to the summit is around 3.5 km with 600 meters of elevation gained. The descent to the bottom is quite long. We will ski along our climbing track, but everything is wide and open so everyone should be able to hit the untouched snow. From the ropeway top there is a wide open track through the forest for a few km and then we hit the top of Tsugaike ski area and can ski all the way to the bottom of the snow.
Total distance for descent is around 10.5km with 1600 meters of elevation lost.
Following the climb, we'll head to a hot spring to warm up before heading home.
