We are planning to head to Niigata to climb two of the 100 famous mountains of Japan. Though not technically difficult, the heavy snowfall this year will make things interesting.
Monday Night- We will meet up at Ikebukuro station around 8 p.m. and drive to the Myoko area to camp out at a Michi-no-eki to get an early start for our approach on Tuesday.
Tuesday- We'll get up and depart early and stop for breakfast on the way to the trailhead. After dividing up group gear, we'll start making the trek to Koya-Ike Lodge which will be our base-camp for the trip. The walk in will take about 4 hours and is generally a gentle walk with the occasional steep sections, but much of this will be on snow as we start to gain elevation.
*Mountain Hut Lodging is available - We have secured 6 spaces at the moment so please request on your trip application - The hut fee is 7,000 yen per person each night. If you camp out there will be an additional charge of 2,000 yen for the 2 nights.
**Backcountry skiers also welcome - most of the approach to camp can be skied with skins and Hiuchi is a great place to ski down and there is likely to be time to make a run on Tuesday after arriving at camp.
Wednesday- We will wake up around 4 a.m. and start making breakfast, and preparing for the climb, with a plan to depart camp no later than 5:00 a.m. We'll only take what we need for the day so we can climb light and fast. This climb will have a lot of ups and downs. Plan on about 2 hours to get to the pass that drops us to the base of Myoko, and then another 90 minutes to get to the summit. The summit climb is mostly in the trees and there are some rocky sections but it is not technical. An ice axe will be useful for some of the snow field sections on the pass, but this is a great intro route for snow climbers.
We return to our camp via the same route, making for about 7 hours of hiking this day.
Thursday- We will get another early start and head up to the summit of Hiuchi just after breakfast which is a fairly short climb taking about 90 minutes to get up and 60 minutes to come back to camp. Then we pack up and head back to the trailhead. We'll make a quick onsen visit before beginning the trip home.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
・Meals are not included - If you would like Kanto Adventures to arrange meals and stove for you there will be an additional fee / Please inquire.
