We are headed up to Hokkaido for early July to escape the rainy season in Honshu with the plan to summit 4 of the 100 famous mountains of Japan. Daisetsuzan, Tomoraushi, Tokachi, and Yoteizan. The way we are doing this trip is it will start with a 4 day trek camping in the Daisetsuzan National Park for 3 nights completely self sufficient carrying all of our own food and shelter. Then after getting down we will spend 2 nights staying in lodges to climb the other two peaks. Early July is also when the wildflowers are going to be out so the mountains will be beautiful though there is likely to be remaining snow in places requiring light crampons at times.
For the 4 day / 3 night trek in the National Park, you can review the route here through Yama. The total distance over 4 days is 57.7km with 3,142 meters of elevation gained and 4,127 meters lost.
Not Included in trip fee:
・Airfare to Sapporo
・Lodging on 7/2 (Sat) before the trek
・Lodging on 7/9 (Sat) after the trek
・Meals
Schedule
Everyone is requested to arrive in Sapporo by Saturday 7/2 and stay within 1km of the Sapporo Central Train Station
We will meet up Saturday evening for dinner and to explore a bit of the Sapporo nightlife, but we have to get up early on Sunday morning.

July 3rd (Sun) - Asahi Dake Ropeway to Daisetsuzan Peak to Kurodake
Campsite: Kurodake Refuge 5:00 a.m. - We will meet up in central Sapporo and travel to Daisetsuzan National Park by van. We'll stop for breakfast along the way. We will gear up at the bottom of the Asahi-dake ropeway and then run the van out to our exit trailhead so our onsen gear will be waiting at the end of the trek. Then we take the ropeway up to get started. First thing we head straight up to the main summit of Asahi-dake the highest point in the National Park and the official peak for the 100 Famous mountains. Then we trek along ridges and valleys to Kurodake Refuge where we will make camp. Hiking Level: 2C - 9.8km distance with 966 meters elevation gain, 671 descent. |
July 4 (Mon) - Kurodake to Hokkaidake to Chubetsudake
Lodging: Chubetsudake Refuge This is a great day covering quite a bit of distance, but there are no steep sections, just a lot of gentle ups and downs as we trek through various river valleys and mountain ridges. We'll pass over 3 peaks along the way as well getting great views and spending the majority of the time above tree line. This is where the national park gets quiet as few people endeavor on this longer trek and it will be a true wilderness experience. Hiking Level: 1B - 16.9km 798 meters elevation gain 1,054 meters elevation lost |
July 5 (Tue) - Chubetsudake Refuge to Tomoraushi
Lodging: Hisagonuma Shelter This day also covers a good bit of distance, but we will only spend 3 hours carrying our full backpacks to the lakeside Hisagonuma Shelter. After setting up our camp for the night we will do an out and back trip with light bags to the summit of Tomoraushi our 2nd of the 100 famous mountains on this trip. This day does not have a lot of big climbs but continues with the trend of gentle rolling hills until the final but short climb up to the summit of Tomoraushi. We'll have plenty of time to enjoy the summit before heading back to our campsite. Hiking Level: 2C - Distance 16.6km 984 meters elevation gained, 929 meters lost |
July 6 (Wed) - Hisagonuma Shelter to Kaundake to Teninkyo Onsen
Lodging: Pension Ressha House Our final day is a bit shorter than the last two with a lot of elevation lost. We will pass over Kaundake peak early into the trek and then begin making the descent all the way to Teninkyo Onsen getting back into forest along the way. You'll be able to see the changes from alpine terrain above tree line to the lush forests of the river valley. The types of plants change significantly as we descend. Our onsen kits will be waiting at the end and after getting down we will head straight to some great baths to clean up after 4 days in the wild. Lodging will be near central Furano and we'll get to town by 3 p.m. so there will be some time to explore. *Hiking Level: 1B |
July 7 (Thu) - Rest Day in Furano
Lodging: Pension Ressha House We may adjust the rest day schedule depending on the weather, but the plan is to spend Thursday taking it easy in Furano and exploring some of the off mountain options available. Furano is famous for lavender fields. We will also visit the Shirogane blue pond which is beautiful and has some nice walking paths as well to see the views of the mountains along the Biei River. Farm visits and ice cream are also on the agenda for this day! |
July 8 (Fri) Mt. Tokachi-dake 1 Day Climb
Lodging: Kyogoku Camping Ground We will get going at first light grabbing breakfast along the way to the trailhead. Climbing Mt. Tokachi is not technical but it does involve 1,000 meters of elevation gain. Tokachi is an active volcano and the climbing route involves heading up from the valley crossing through alpine terrain and eventually into the volcanic landscape near the top. 360 degree views are possible at the top. We return via the same route we climbed. After getting down we will drive for about 2 hours to our campsite for the next day. Hiking Level: 1C - Distance 11 km 1,140 meters elevation gained and lost |
July 9 (Sat) - Mt. Yotei Climb
Yoteizan is another volcanic peak in Hokkaido and looks a lot like Mt. Fuji from a distance though it is much more green on the mountain. We are planning to climb via the Kyogoku Route to the top and descend via the same route. This is one of the shorter routes on the mountain but it is physically demanding with steep sections included. It will be a great challenge and you'll be rewarded with an amazing view of the crater at the summit. Hiking Level: 2C - Distance 9.1 km 1,497 meters elevation gained and lost After the ascent we will head back to Sapporo, if you schedule a late evening flight you'll be able to make it back to Tokyo, otherwise plan to spend the night in Sapporo before heading home on Sunday or after depending on your plans. |
*You are also welcome to arrive on an earlier day or depart at a later day if you wish to explore more in the area before heading back to Kanto.
