On this trip we are headed up to the the northern Yatsugadake area for an easy overnight snow climb that includes a stay in the Honzawa Onsen Mountain Hut or camp near the hot spring. Winter is a great time to see wildlife including Kamoshika and lots of bird life. We will also be making a summit climb to the top of Io-Dake in the center of the Yatsugadake range, and this climb is okay for experienced hikers looking to get into snow mountain climbing.
The hike in on Saturday isn't strenuous, but but does involve a bit of gradual climbing. The trail is scenic passing by two alpine lakes and some streams. We will spend the afternoon practicing ice axe and crampon techniques for those who have not been out this season and also enjoy the onsen at the mountain hut (separated), as well as the wild outdoor bath (mixed, bathing suit okay) a few hundred meters from the hut with views up Tengu-Dake.
Sunday after breakfast we will be making an ascent to the summit of Io-Dake. This is not a technical climb, but does require ice axe and crampons to ascend. Total elevation gain from the hut is about 350 meters, and will take around 2 hours to climb and then 90 minutes to return to the hut. After that, it's an easy walk out where a hot spring will be waiting at the trailhead to get warmed up one more time after 2 days in the snow.
