On this trip we are headed up to the the northern Yatsugadake area for an easy overnight snowshoe that includes a stay in the Honzawa Onsen Mountain Hut. Winter is a great time to see wildlife including Kamoshika and lots of bird life.
The hike in on Saturday isn't strenuous, but but does involve a bit of gradual climbing. The trail is scenic passing by one or two alpine lakes and some streams. We can spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the onsen at the mountain hut (separated), as well as the wild outdoor bath (mixed, bathing suit okay) a few hundred meters from the hut with views up Tengu-Dake.
Dinner will be prepared in the mountain hut, and we can take it easy before going out for a short night time walk to see a sky full of stars without any light pollution.
After getting out of the mountains on Sunday we'll make one more stop at an onsen (entry not included) to warm up before heading back to Tokyo.
Lodging Details
Our room will be shared among our group and other hikers potentially but everyone will have an individual futon, and there is also a Kotatsu (heated table) in the room. The hut also sells various drinks and snacks as well.
