This is a great moderate level overnight hike perfect for fit beginners looking to get into overnight backpacking, or anyone else looking to do a 2 day hike in the southern alps. This hike features 3 peaks along the summit ridge topping out at 2,841 meters and is one of the 100 famous mountains. This trip is timed to hit the peak of the fall colors, so don't miss this great opportunity.
Saturday:
By heading up to the mountains on Friday night, we'll be able to get an early start and take our time to get up to our campsite and pick out a great campsite before others arrive. Total hiking distance is 5.5 km this day, hiking up above the river in the Dondogo valley which features numerous waterfalls along the way. After setting up our camp we'll have time to head up to the summit of Jizo-ga-dake to check out the views of the south Alps in the afternoon light and do some scrambling on the summit obelisk. A filling and tasty dinner is planned for the evening.
Sunday:
After waking up and having breakfast we'll pack up our tents and everything and head up to the summit ridge above the hut and then begin walking south to hit the other 2 peaks of Hou-ou-san completing the 3 required to claim success on this mountain. From Yakushi-dake we head down a relatively gentle but long ridge to get back to our starting point. Total hiking distance this day is 9.5 km.
