We are looking to get the most out of the last bit of winter at Yatsugadake, and have planned an exciting trip to the summits of Io-dake and Aka-dake. Check out a previous year's photos here!
Friday Night- We will do pick-ups in Fuchu at 8 p.m. and then arrive at the trailhead around 10 p.m so we have plenty of time to get a good night's rest. We will stay in a bunkhouse at the trailhead that is heated and includes futons making for an easy pack up on Saturday morning.
Saturday - We will get an early start and head up to Aka-dake Kosen where we will set up camp for the night. You also have the option to stay in a super comfy mountain hut for around 6,000 yen. After getting everything set up, we will review basic mountaineering skills and then climb up to the summit of Io-Dake. This is a great warm-up climb with no technical parts, but very good to get the hang of crampons and ice axe before our big climb on Sunday.
Sunday- We will wake up around 5 a.m. have breakfast at the campsite and then pack light for our ascent. Our ascent will be via the Jizo Ridge (地蔵尾根) which has some steep sections as well as a short but well protected knife ridge that makes for some great photos. From the top of Jizo Ridge it's less than 1 hour to the summit. We will then descend via Bunzaburo route and then make the descent back down to the campsite to pack up and head to the van.
Following the climb, we'll head to a hot spring to warm up before heading home.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
