For this snow shoe trip we are heading to Oku-Nikko where the skies are almost always blue in winter and the snow is very powdery. This snowshoe hike starts in the Senjo-ga-hara plain where there are 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and then climbs up gently into the hills along a river.
The Iori Waterfall is an amazing site with deep blue colored ice and huge ice columns. It is also possible walk behind the frozen waterfall as well.
Total hiking distance is around 10km and elevation gained and lost is less 250 meters so it is not too difficult. The final part of the hike is a bit of a climb, but we will carry sleds with us so we can slide back down in style!
We finish the trip off with a stop by the Yumoto Onsen which has milky colored water and a strong sulphuric smell. This is definitely one of the top natural hot spring areas in Japan!
Snow boot rentals are available for 1,000 yen per pair.
