This trip we are heading to Iwate prefecture to climb 2 of the 100 Famous Mountains, experience some amazing Tohoku hot springs, and try some local sake. Fall comes early to this area with colors visible on average from mid to late September every year.
We'll be eating well in camp cooking over a fire, baking in a dutch oven, and barbecuing up a great variety of meat and veggies.:
Friday Night: We will be meeting up in Ikebukuro and departing at 7:30 p.m. and will begin the journey to Tohoku. We will stop about halfway in Northern Fukushima to camp out at a Michi-no-eki.
Saturday: We will depart around 5:30 a.m. and continue the drive up to Iwate taking a few rest breaks along the way. We will head straight to Hachimantai and do a 5.5km loop hike (Level 1A) and see some alpine lakes, and get some great views of Mt. Iwate as well. Hachimantai (八幡平) is also one of the 100 famous mountains.
After this hike we will stop by one of the hotsprings in the area before heading to our campsite at the base of Mt. Iwate where we will get our camp set up for The next two nights.
Sunday: We'll start the day with a wonderful camp breakfast and hot coffee. This is our big climbing day and we'll be making a go at the summit of Iwate-yama. The climb starts in the forest, but 2/3 of the climb will be above tree line with fantastic views throughout. There is a hut at the 8th station where we'll stop to have lunch before the final ascent. After spending some time on the summit, we'll head back down to our camp site and there will be an opportunity to head to a hot spring before cooking dinner in camp.
Monday: After breakfast we'll make the drive to Morioka city where we will stop by a couple of the sites.
First we will visit the Hoon-ji Temple (報恩寺) which was originally built in 1394. This temple is famous for having 500 individually carved statues including various images including Marco Polo and Kublai Khan.
After the temple we will stop by the Kikunotsukasa Sake brewery which is open from 9 a.m. and take a short tour and also have the opportunity to try a number of their brews.
After this we will begin the drive back making a few stops on the way for icre cream and great Tohoku foods with the plan to be back in Ikebukuro by 6:00 p.m.
