This trip we are heading to Iwate prefecture to climb 2 of the 100 Famous Mountains, experience some amazing Tohoku hot springs, and try some local sake' and beer. This area does not experience huge crowds like a lot of outdoor areas in Golden Week.
We'll be eating well in camp cooking over a fire, baking in a dutch oven, and barbecuing up a great variety of meat and veggies.:
Thursday Night: We will be meeting up in Hanno and staying at the Hiker's B&B so we can get an early start on Friday before traffic jams get started.
Friday: We will depart around 5 a.m. and begin the drive up to Tohoku taking a few rest breaks along the way. Our first destination will be the town of Morioka for a visit to the old castle ruins which is fun to explore and should be covered in Sakura trees at full bloom. We'll have lunch in town and have a chance to stop by the local Baern Microbrewery to try some local brew. After that we'll make a short drive to Iwate-yama and set up our camp for 3 nights.
Saturday: We'll start the day with a wonderful camp breakfast and hot coffee. This is our big climbing day and we'll be making a go at the summit of Iwate-yama. There will still be some snow near the top of the mountain, but it's not too steep. Most of the climb will be above tree line with fantastic views throughout. There is a hut at the 8th station where we'll stop to have lunch before the final ascent. After spending some time on the summit, we'll head back down to our camp site and there will be an opportunity to head to a hot spring before cooking dinner in camp.
Sunday: After breakfast we'll make a short drive over to the Hachimantai area and go for a snow hike without much altitude gain. One of the main features of this hike is the Dragon Eye pond which looks amazing if the weather conditions are right. After reaching the summit we'll return to the van and make a trip to Kyounsou for an amazing hot spring experience. Then it's back to camp for the night and another great dinner and camp fire.
Monday: We have a long drive ahead of us this day, but we'll first have a nice breakfast before getting started. We'll work to come up with some interesting stops along the way back, but we are trying to get back to Tokyo by 3 p.m. before the traffic gets really terrible. Drop off will be at Ikebukuro station.
