We are going to open up the camping and hiking season with a trip to the warmer Izu Penninsula setting up a base at Baird Brewery's riverside campground. We have 2 days of moderate level hiking planned and plenty of time for beer and BBQ on Saturday evening.
Saturday: We are going to head down to the Izu Penninsula and make our first stop off in Shuzenji to do a couple of walks in the historic onsen area. We will make an easy 1A level hike up to the top of Daruma Mountain, and also head into the center of Shuzenji to visit a couple of temples and the famous bamboo forest. There will be time to stop in one of the hot springs before heading to the campsite around 2 p.m.
After setting up camp, you will get a welcome beer from the brewery and we'll start up the BBQ in the early evening. The brewery remains open until 8 p.m. Feel free to bring your own beverages, or you will be able to purchase some amazing craft beer on site as well.
Sunday: We'll start with a camping breakfast and then pack everything up. It will be a short drive to the hiking trailhead. The plan is to hike up to the top of Joyama and then traverse over to Katsuragi-yama. There are many opportunities for views of Mt. Fuji along the way. Azaleas and Rhododendron should also be blooming at this time. Lunch is planned on top of Katsuragi-yama which also has an ice cream shop on the summit.
After the climb, we will make a trip to a hot spring then head back to Tokyo.
