We have planned an exciting route in the North Alps for two of the days of this holiday weekend. Both days are big days with some exciting climbing. Trip departs on Friday night so we can get an early start on Saturday morning.
On Saturday we still start out early hiking up through the Daisekkei (大雪渓) a year round permanent snow field to access the summit of Shirouma-dake one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan. Light crampons or chain spikes will be needed to do this section. Then we will walk along the crest of the Alps to reach Tengu-sansou Hut which where we will spend the night. Total hiking time this day will be around 8 hours.
On Sunday, we will enjoy an amazing Alps sunrise and then set off into the Kaerazu Kiretto, which translates loosely as the 'Ridge of No Return'. This is a very exciting rock scrambling route assisted by chains and ladders. The views are amazing and very few people travel this route making it a great place to escape the holiday crowds this weekend.
At the end of the kiretto we arrive at the summit of Karamatsu-dake which is one of the 200 famous mountains of Japan. The descent from Karamatsu is quite gentle and we will pass by Happo Pond, one of the most beautiful alpine ponds in Japan with a great mirror image of the alps. Then from the top of Happo One' ski area, we will then take the lifts down to finish the trip in the Hakuba Valley.
