This trip is a great chance to get up into the North Alps while they are still covered with snow but when the weather is more stable and snow conditions great for a snow climb. The timing is good for spotting Ptarmigan (雷鳥).
Friday Night- We will meet at Ikebukuro station at 7:30 p.m. and then drive out to the Hakuba area and camp out at a Michi-no-eki with a large roof area.
Saturday- We will depart the Michi-no-eki at 6:00 a.m. and start head out to Hakuba. Along the way we'll stop at a convenience store for breakfast and to pick up any last minute supplies. The aim is to get to the ski area a bit early so we can get in line for the gondola before the crowds come.
We will start by taking the gondola and chair lifts up to the highest point of the ski resort to start our hike. From there it's a fairly gentle walk on a wide ridge working our way up past Happo Pond and then on up towards the summit. The route is not technically difficult, but it is definitely a workout. We will review crampon and ice use along the way and you might find trekking poles handy for the lower part of the mountain. We'll be able to spend a short time on the summit before heading back down the way we came.
There are sections on the descent that we will be able to sled on making the descent quicker and more fun.
Following the climb, we'll head to a hot spring to warm up before heading home.
