Kogashi-yama is a lesser known mountain popular with rock climbers in Tochigi prefecture near Nikko. This hike features some great views from the starting point at at the lake at the source of the Akagawa River. The hike has a lot of ridge climbing which involves some rock scrambling and chains, making for an exciting day in the mountains.
This is a loop hike starting at Akagawa Lake and then heading up the rocky main east ridge of Kogashiyama. During this ascent there will be numerous scrambling and chain sections. Helmets are required for this section of the hike, and we will provide them for anyone who does not have their own. Part of this route is officially a variation route meaning it is not on any maps and few people walk it, but it is very exciting!
After reaching the summit ridge, we begin walking south to the summit of Kogashiyama. After lunch at the summit we continue south with some ups and downs along the way passing by 2 more named summits for a total of 3 sumits in the day. The descent is relatively gentle compared to the climb. Total hiking distance is approximately 8km with 650 meters of elevation gained.
After the hike we'll head to a local hot spring for a warm bath to relax some tired muscles and have a beverage of your choice.
