Kusastsu Shirane-san (草津白根山) is an active volcano located just north of Mt Asama, and is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan (百名山). The hiking trails around it’s crater area are exclusively above treeline, and the views all around are magnificent, taking in the nearby mountains of Nagano, Niigata, Gunma and Yamanashi prefectures. We are timing this hike to coincide with the beginning of the Fall colours, so expect some wonderful panoramas up there.
This is a fairly gentle hike, involving several hundred metres of elevation gain to reach the crater plateau, and then a relaxed walk to the top before reversing the route back to the van.
After the hike we will soak our limbs in Kusatsu onsen, one of Japan’s most famous and celebrated onsen hot spring resorts before heading back to Tokyo.
