4/2 (Sat) Kusatsu SHirane Hike

This trip is a great chance to get up into the North Alps while they are still covered with snow but when the weather is more stable and snow conditions great for a snow climb. The timing is good for spotting Ptarmigan (雷鳥).

Friday Night- We will meet at Ikebukuro station at 8:00 p.m. and then drive out closer to the hiking area and camp out at a Michi-no-eki with a large roof area.

Saturday- We will depart the Michi-no-eki at 6:00 a.m. and stop by a convenience store to pick up breakfast and Hot Coffee. We aim to be at the trailhead in Manza Onsen around 7:00 a.m. and will start our hike then.

Total hiking distance is around 6km with 500 meters of elevation gained and lost.

*Trekking pole(s) are strongly recommended on this hike.

Our route is a figure-8 loop starting up the west ridge of the mountain and will continue up to the main summit of Shirane which is outside of the volcanic exclusion zone. From there we will head south-east and stop in an area with a great view of the crater lake and have lunch here. After that we hike on snowed over roads to head back to Manza onsen with a more gentle descent.

There are sections on the descent that we will be able to sled on making the descent quicker and more fun so we'll have those packed and available for everyone.

Following the climb, we'll head to an awesome and stinky hot spring to warm up before heading home.
