Kusatsu Onsen may be one of the most famous hot spring areas in Japan, and it is also a wonderful winter destination with plenty of snow and great scenery which features the active Kusatsu Shirane Volcano. This trip is a full day adventure which includes a guided snowshoe trip in the forests below Kusatsu Shirane and onsen entry at the end of the trip.
There are two valleys that we plan to visit starting from the Tengu-yama Nature Center and total snowshoeing distance will be under 6km and this trip is very beginner friendly. There will be a chance to see winter wildlife including snow rabbits and foxes if we are lucky! In the Tanizawa River Valley there are sections of ice curtain that is also a great feature of this hike. Depending on time we may be able to even get to an overlook to see the Jofu Waterfall.
After spending a day out in the cold, we'll head to the biggest outdoor bath in Kusatsu and spend some time warming up in a hot spring surrounded by snow. After the onsen we'll briefly visit the center of Kusatsu to see the source of the hot spring where massive amounts of super hot water flow from the ground.
