Makihata-yama (巻機山) is a 1,967 meter peak in the Echigo mountains in the Yuzawa area near the Japan sea. Due to the heavy snow fall in this area, the tree line is quite low making for an awesome alpine hike with 360 degree views on the high ridges. This is also one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan.
This trip will meet up on Friday night in Ikebukuro and then camp out at a Michino eki near the mountain so we can get an early start.
The total hiking distance is 12km on an out and back trail with 1,200 meters of elevation gained and lost. The hike starts out in the trees but quickly reaches the alpine zone with great views. There are alpine lakes along the way and fields of wild flowers as well. We'll have lunch on the summit and then head back down the way we came.
There is very little steep terrain but the ascent is definitely a fitness challenge.
