Mizugaki-san is one of the 100 famous mountains located near the border of Nagano and Yamanashi. It sits at a height of 2,230M and is made up of multiple granite spires making it a very craggy and impressive peak.
This year we are changing our route and making this a loop route starting and ending in the Mizugaki Nature park. The main difference is this will give us a chance to visit the Mizugaki Fudo Waterfall (瑞垣不動滝) which is an amazing tall waterfall carved into a vertical granite wall. Total hiking distance is 9km with approximately 800 meters of elevation gained.
The hike begins walking through a forest where we should see a lot of colors as we ascend up the mountain. Along the way we'll pass by an old mountain hut that serves up great coffee. From this hut the fun part of the hike begins and we'll start heading up a ridge towards the summit. Along the way there will be some chains and ladders (nothing scary) and great views above the tree line. The top features 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains including Yatsu-ga-dake, Kinpu-san, and the Japanese Alps.
After descending the mountain we'll head to the Masutomi-no-yu onsen which features a Radium hot spring source and baths of various temperatures. This will be a great place to relax after the hike.
