This trip will be to the less crowded side of Mt. Fuji in the Asagiri Highland a week before the Golden Week rush. There are numerous dairy farms, and open plains in this area with great views of Mt. Fuji throughout. We'll be setting up our base camp next to Tanuki Lake with views of Fuji across the lake. This area is protected from light pollution by the surrounding mountains and there are tons of stars to be seen at night.
There will be 2 chances to see the Diamond Fuji sunrise as the sun rises above Fuji behind the lake. It's an amazing experience.
We'll be eating well in camp cooking over a fire, baking in a dutch oven, and barbecuing up a great variety of meat and veggies.
Friday Night: We will make the approximately 2 hour drive on Friday night and set up our tents at the campsite to establish a nice camp site.
Saturday: If the weather cooperates we will see the Diamond Fuji sunrise and you are willing to get up early. After sunrise breakfast and coffee will be prepared as a group.
The main event for the day will be a loop hike to the tops of Chojagatake and Tenshigatake. From the top of the mountain ridge there will be views of Mt. Fuji as well as the southern alps. The hike is rated 2B by our hiking scale.
Great dinner and camp-fire will finish the night.
Sunday: We will get an early start with one more chance to see the Diamond Fuji Sunrise. After a quick breakfast we'll pack up our campsite and make a short drive out to the Mt. Kenashi trailhead. This mountain is one of the 200 famous mountains, but also features one of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan, Fudo-no-taki. This climb starts as a valley riverside climb and eventually becomes a ridge climb heading up steep sections at time, but nothing technical. The views from the top are amazing, and we will return via the same route.
After the climb, we will make a trip to a hot spring then head back to Tokyo.
