This trip will be to the less crowded side of Mt. Fuji in the Asagiri Highland. There are numerous dairy farms, and open plains in this area with great views of Mt. Fuji throughout. We'll be setting up our base camp next to Tanuki Lake with views of Fuji across the lake. This area is protected from light pollution by the surrounding mountains and there are tons of stars to be seen at night.
We'll be eating well in camp cooking over a fire, baking in a dutch oven, and barbecuing up a great variety of meat and veggies.
Day 1: Once we arrive at our campsite, we'll get everything set up and then the remainder of the day you'll be free to enjoy the area around the campground. Bikes are available for rent to explore the area, and there's an easy hike that starts right from the campground as well. Dinner and a campfire will finish out the night.
Day 2: For those who are willing to get up early, we'll be making a short trip to a point where we'll be able to see a Diamond Fuji sunrise which will come over the summit at 6:05 a.m. After the sunrise we'll cook up breakfast.
The main event for the day will be a loop hike to the tops of Chojagatake and Tenshigatake. From the top of the mountain ridge there will be views of Mt. Fuji as well as the southern alps. The hike is rated 2B by our hiking scale.
Another great dinner and camp-fire will finish the night.
Day 3: On the last day of the trip we'll pack up our campsite after breakfast and will then head out to the southeast side of Mt. Fuji for a hike to the Mt. Fuji Grand Canyon. Although it is nowhere near as big as the American version which it borrows it's name, it is a very unique geological formation on the the side of Mt. Fuji. After the hike, we'll stop by a hot spring before making the trip back to Yokohama.
