On this trip, we will be spending the Silver Week 3 day weekend in the Myoko area camping and hiking. Our base camp will be at the Nojiriko-kogen Campground right on the lake with some great mountain views. On Sunday and Monday we will climb 2 of the 100 famous mountains of Japan. Amazing food is on the menu including some dutch oven cooking and a BBQ.
Saturday:
We will depart early from Yokohama and Tokyo to try and beat the traffic out of town and will arrive at the campground before lunch-time. You're free to explore the lake-side area, swim in the lake, or rent some canoes and go for a paddle around the lake. There will be plenty to keep you entertained throughout the day. Saturday evening will be a BBQ of meat and veggies over a wood fire.
Sunday:
We'll have an early hot breakfast and head out to the trailhead for Myoko-yama. The hiking course will start from Tsubame Onsen and pass a wild onsen and waterfall on the way up the valley on the east side of the mountain. Just before the summit there is an exciting chain traverse across a rock face before hitting the main summit. From the summit we head down the north side of the mountain and complete a loop ending at the same onsen we started. We'll have time to have a relaxing bath before heading back to camp to prepare dinner which will include a dutch oven dish. Total distance is 11km and 1200 meters of elevation gained, but the gain is gradual through most the climb and it's not too strenuous at any point.
Monday:
We'll need to get an early start and pack up camp and hit the road after breakfast. On the way back to Tokyo we pass by Azumaya-yama so we're going to climb it. Our hiking route is another loop route and actually hits an extra peak, Neko-dake before heading up to the summit of Azumaya. This is a fairly easy climb but has some amazing views from the top. Total distance is 10.5 km and 700 meters of elevation gained. A hot spring will finish off the trip before driving back to Tokyo.
