Naeba-yama (苗場山) is famous as a ski resort, but it is also one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan (百名山). We are timing this trip to hit the peak of the fall colors, and on the lower part of the mountain you can expect to see oak and beech trees showing off their colors and some colorful bushes and grasses will be out on the upper part of the mountain.
Our route is the Haraigawa route which starts out in the forest and gradually climbs up into the alpine area with 360 degree views and alpine lakes. Total distance is about 13km with 850 meters of elevation gained and lost. We plan to have lunch on the top and then reverse our route to head back down the mountain.
After they hike we'll stop by a local hot spring to relax before making the drive home.
