This trip is a great opportunity to get a taste of real winter mountaineering. Nasu-dake provides great alpine terrain above tree line with quick access making it a great option for learning the basics.
1/15 (Sun) is also reserved in case of dangerous weather conditions, so please try to keep both days available if possible.
We have developed a one day course to give you the basic skills needed to climb on routes that involve ice axe and crampons. This time we are heading to Nasu-dake in Tochigi for a climb of Chausu Peak (茶臼岳). A lot of time will be spent in the beginning practicing ice axe skills including self belay and self arrest, as well as learning and practicing various crampon techniques throughout the climb including french technique, front pointing, and cramponing on rock. Of course we will finish the day with a hot spring before heading home.
The climb is an out and back climb starting from the parking lot below the ropeway and then heading up to the summer trailhead parking lot where there is a great spot to practice ice axe skills before heading up the mountain. Then we head up the valley between Asahi and Chausu-dake. Depending on time and snow conditions we will either climb directly up from the pass with the emergency shelter, or head around the mountain by the volcanic steam vents and then come up the south side of the mountain and descend back to the pass.
After the climb we will head to Shika no yu, a 300 year old hot spring that has maintained it's atmosphere since first starting in the Edo Period.
