This trip is a great chance to experience ski / snowboard touring. Overall the mountain is not steep and intermediate skiers and snowboarders are welcome to join. If you have a backcountry ski / splitboard set up then you are good to go, otherwise you we can provide snowshoes and you can carry skis / snowboard up the mountain and ski / board down.
Friday Night- We will meet up at Hanno Station and spend the night at Hiker's B&B so we can get an early start on Saturday.
Saturday- We will depart the B&B at 5:30 a.m. and it's just over a 2 hour drive to the Ski area plus a stop for breakfast along the way at the Yokogawa Service area where we will arrive at opening time.
Our adventure starts at the Sugidaira Kogen Ski area where the #1 lift will take us to the top of the ski area. We will then begin ascending via the main west ridge. The ascent to the summit is 4.5km with an emergency hut at the halfway point to take a break. Once we reach the summit, we'll take a short break for lunch and enjoy the 360 degree views of the North Alps and the Yatsugadake range.
The descent will be more or less along the west ridge as we climbing, but with plenty of opportunity to make some turns and get some more distance in on the descent. The route is relatively open with very few trees, and the snow should be powdery up high. We will not rush the descent and take plenty of time for photos and video of the descent.
Following the climb, we'll head to a hot spring to warm up before heading home. After the trip, we drop everyone off at Wako station which has access to the Yurakucho and Tobu Tojo lines so you can get back home in Tokyo quickly.
