This will likely be our last overnight hike of the year and we are headed to a hidden valley in Nikko for an overnight trip with a stay in a free hut between the peaks of Nantai-san (100 famous mountain) and Nyoho-san (200 famous mountain).
On Saturday we depart Ikebukuro early and head up to the Senjogahara area of Oku-Nikko and then drive further around to the north side of Nantai-san. We will then park and throw on backpacks with overnight gear (no tents) and walk about 5km on a forest road to the Shizu Emergency hut, which is actually a quite large well maintained hut in the valley between the two peaks. The walk to the hut is quite easy and takes about 1 hour.
After dropping off our overnight gear in the hut we will make the ascent up to the summit of Nantai (about 2 hours) and then come back down. There are some light scrambling points and steep sections making this a level two hike, but this side of the mountain is a much more fun climb than the typical tourist route starting at shrine by Chuzenji Lake. We'll prepare dinner together in the hut and head to bed early.
On Sunday, we will get up before sunrise and prepare breakfast and coffee. Then we have about 6 hours of hiking to do a loop route that ascends to the peak of Nyohosan. This hike is actually quite interesting with some scrambly bits and great views throughout as we get above tree line very quickly. The descent will be a more gentle trail. We will stop for lunch at the hut, pack up all of our gear and head back to the car. Then we'll make a small detour to Yumoto Onsen for a hot bath before heading back to Tokyo.
