Shirane-san is located deep within the Nikko mountains, and spends half of the year covered with snow. We are going to take advantage of it's geographic location making it relatively immune to the Japanese rainy season and will often have sunny days in June.
Because it is deep in Nikko, we are leaving Tokyo early to avoid the traffic jams, and to get started in time to be able to have lunch either on the peak, or on the ridge overlooking the 5 colored lake. The hike is not very steep, but it will involve sustained climbing over the first 4 km. We will be hiking through open Alpine meadows filled with wild flowers, and can see some great examples of alpine lakes on the way as well as a large one located in a crater bowl below the main peak.
