This is an introductory level snow mountaineering trip and we will teach you the basic skills you need to know including ice axe use, self arrest practice, and how to walk in crampons. The climb is not very technical and is a great introduction to winter mountaineering without the need of super expensive mountaineering boots due to the lower elevation of this peak. This climb is also a great review for experienced climbers and a very enjoyable peak.
We will depart Ikebukuro at 6:00 a.m. and arrive just after the gondola opens and the initial crowds have cleared. After reaching the top of the gondola, we'll hike through a beautiful snowy forest with occasional peaks of the peak of Shirane. Along the way we will stop for a practice session using ice axe and crampons so you will be able to go up to the summit and back down safely.
The climb up to the summit is not technical but it is certainly a challenge depending on snow conditions. After reaching the top and taking some celebration photos we'll head back down the way we came. This trip will finish off with a visit to a hot spring before heading back to Tokyo.
**Coco Heli is required to use the ropeway for mountaineering. Rental are available from the ski resort and included in the price, but if you have your own you can get a 1,000 yen discount, so please mention this in the comments when you apply for the trip.
