We are headed to the North Alps where there is reliable early snow fall for a great weekend of winter mountaineering. Nishi-Hotaka is located above Kamikochi, but we will be approaching from the Shin-Hotaka Onsen side taking a ropeway up to 2,000 meters making for a very comfortable approach. Ice axe and crampon training session will also be provided for those who are just getting started or if it is your first climb of the season.
Saturday: We depart Fuchu around 6:30 a.m. and make the trip out to Shin-Hotaka Onsen, with the plan to take the ropeway around 10 a.m. It is about a 90 minute hike up to the mountain hut and campsite where we will have lunch. After setting up our campsite for the night and anchoring tents into the snow we'll have a couple of hours to practice ice axe and crampon skills so we can make a safe climb on Sunday. A hot and filling dinner will be prepared on Saturday night and we'll head to bed early to get an early start.
Sunday: Morning comes early with a 4:30 a.m. wake up and breakfast before sunrise. We plan to set off just after 6 a.m. at first light. The climb involves multiple summits along the way to Nishi Hotaka Doppyo (西穂高独標) our goal for the trip. The majority of this climb is not technical but the wind often provides some challenging conditions. The final 100 meters up to the summit of the Doppyo involves some light scrambling with chains to get up to the main summit. After taking some summit photos we head back the way we came. We can warm up in the hut with some hot drinks or soup before taking our camp down and then heading back down to the ropeway.
The ropeway drops us off right in front of a hot spring, and we plan to get warmed up before making the drive back to Tokyo.
*Ice axe and crampon rentals available for free
*Winter sleeping bag rentals might be available for 1,500 yen but extremely limited number.
**Mountaineering rescue insurance is required to join this trip
Tents: We have mountaineering tents available, but do not have individual tents available, only shared tents. We can help arrange solo rental tents for around 3~4,000 yen per tent for anyone who prefers an individual tent.
