On this trip we will be traversing across one of the greatest ridges in the Northern Japanese Alps climbing over 6 3,000+M peaks, 3 of which are on the 100 famous mountains list.
The Daikiretto is considered one of the most challenging and technical "normal" hiking routes in Japan. Despite it's short distance of less than 2km and taking many hours to traverse, it is great physical and emotional challenge. We will be crossing over knife ridges with drop offs of over 100 meters on each side, and climbing up steep vertical walls (aided by chains and ladders).
***Trip Departs Thursday Night
Friday:
By heading up to the mountains on Thursday night, we'll be able to get an early start and take our time to get up to the hut Hotaka-sanso. This is a fairly long hike up a gorge on the west side of the mountains starting from Kamikochi. Technically it's not difficult with some easy scrambling, but there's about 1,500 meters of elevation to be gained. After reaching Hotaka-sanso we can relax with beer and cook up a tasty dinner before heading to bed early.
Sunday:
This will be a shorter day distance wise, but the most mentally challenging day of the trip. We warm up with an easy walk to the top of Karasawa-dake, and that is the end of the easy terrain till after lunch. Then we begin traversing along the rocky ridges to make our way over to Kita-Hotaka aided by a number of chains and ladders along the way. From there it is a steep descent losing 500M on near vertical rock faces at times to get to the bottom of the Kiretto. From there we hit a couple of knife ridges and then climb up to the hut below Minami-dake to relax for lunch. From there it's relatively easy walking with some ups and downs as we make it over to the Yari-ga-take Hut where we will spend the night.
Monday:
We'll get an early start making a quick scramble up to the summit of the Yari Pinnacle for our final summit photos then grab our gear and begin the 22km walk down the mountain to Kamikochi. Over half of the route is basically flat and we'll be able to cover the entire distance in about 6 hours to get back to Kamikochi around lunch time, grab a taxi back to the van hit up a hot spring and then head back home.
