On this trip we will be traversing across one of the greatest ridges in the Northern Japanese Alps, starting off by climbing Yari-ga-dake, the "Matterhorn" of Japan, and 5th tallest peak, and then working our way across the range to Oku-Hotaka the 3rd tallest peak.
The Daikiretto is considered one of the most challenging and technical "normal" hiking routes in Japan. Despite it's short distance of less than 2km and taking 3 hours to traverse, it is great physical and emotional challenge. We will be crossing over knife ridges with drop offs of over 100 meters on each side, and climbing up steep vertical walls (aided by chains and ladders). The Gendarme section on the 3rd day is even more challenging, with more exposure.
***Trip Departs Friday Night
Saturday:
This will be physically the hardest day of the hike. 11km with 2,100 meters of elevation gained over 8 hours of walking. The first half of the hike is a leisurely scenic walk along a river up to Yari-daira where we will stop for lunch. From this point the climbing begins and we will slowly work our way up to the main Alps ridge and the base of the Yari-ga-dake massif. After setting up camp, we'll make a quick trip up to the summit and celebrate a hard days work.
Sunday:
This will be a shorter day distance wise, but the most mentally challenging day of the trip. The first 2 hours will be a fairly easy ridge walk across 3 different peaks to the start of the Daikiretto. Once we are in the Daikiretto the adventure begins, and we will take our time traversing through the alpine terrain and working our way to Kita-Hotaka peak (this should take about 3 hours). Chains and ladders protect all of the most exposed points, and we will be carrying a rope for anyone who needs a little extra support. We will then continue on over Karasawa-dake which also has some fantastic scrambling and set up camp / check in at Hotaka-Sansou.
Monday:
We will be starting out very early this day so we can get up to the peak of Oku-Hotaka for Sunrise, and then we'll head back to our campsite and pack up and begin the trip down the mountain. The descent is not technical, but it is long and rocky. We will head to a hot spring at the end of the hike to relax a bit before making the trip home.
